In March 2020, at the start of the lockdown, Old Time and Klezmer fiddler Craig Judelman of Berlin found himself stuck in Klezmer luminary Michael Alpert’s scenic coastal Scotland home. In a bout of creative fervor and resonance, the two recorded this beautifully intimate collection of music, melding their wide-ranging command of genres and respective musical talents.

“In Der Heym” draws from an array of sources and influences: klezmer melodies documented by folklorist Moishe Beregovski in 1930s Ukraine, time-honored Yiddish songs Alpert learned from pre-WWI-era singers, and traditional tunes of the American South. Alongside these traditional and pre-war tunes are a number of original compositions by each musician, including songs in both Yiddish and English, channeling the range of traditions and styles found throughout.

Here is a warm, personal snapshot of a moment in time, of a deep friendship and musical collaboration, of musical threads and traditions that are at once disparate and transcontinental, yet familiar and interwoven. This is music that is both cozy and thought-provoking, music that inspires reflection on numerous histories from multiple places.

One of my favourite musical discoveries in a while. These musicians are seriously talented. I can’t help imagining that there would have been a whole significant subculture of Yiddish psych rock like this in a different, kinder universe.
