This is a setting I composed of Anna Margolin's dark poem of feminist rage, entitled Epitaf. Anna Margolin was the pen name of Rosa Lebensboim, a Lithuanian poet who lived in many places before settling in New York and influencing the Yiddish writers’ scene there.

Epitaf (translation Shirley Kumove):

Tell him: she couldn't forgive herself
for her despondent mood,
so she went through life
with self-effacing steps.

Say that until her death
she faithfully protected with bare hands
the flame entrusted to her
and in that same fire she burned.

And how in hours of exultation
she took G-d to task,
how her blood sang deeply
as dwarfs destroyed her.

One of my favourite musical discoveries in a while. These musicians are seriously talented. I can’t help imagining that there would have been a whole significant subculture of Yiddish psych rock like this in a different, kinder universe.
