about

This tune was inspired by an early evening summer stroll with friends along the banks of the Neman River in Grodno, Belarus. Walking through the cattails and tall grasses in the golden light, I felt nostalgia for the city's past— Grodno was over 50% Jewish in the early 20th century— and also the joy of living in this current moment.
I originally composed this piece using a standard klezmer “zhok” rhythm. For this rendition, I decided to use a rhythm called “négyes” from the Transylvanian village of Sic (Szék) instead. This idea was inspired by recordings done by Bob Cohen with his band Di Naye Kapelye.
